OBJECTIVE OF THE POSITION:

Coordinator of public and media relations in Save the Children plays a key role in increasing the recognition and reputation of the organization through strategic interaction with the media and social networks. This dynamic and rewarding position involves the development and implementation of comprehensive public relations strategies aimed at effectively positioning Save the Children and its institutional achievements in various media. The person in this position will create compelling content and materials tailored to a variety of audiences, including media, donors, partners and allies, ensuring broad resonance of our mission and impact.

Public and Media Relations Coordinator, who has significant experience in the field of journalism or media relations, will play a key role in ensuring that our activities are covered on national and international platforms. This will be based on the ability to analyze scientific, technical, social and economic data to identify compelling narratives.

Primary responsibilities include working with program development and quality teams, as well as advocacy and communications teams to identify and developing impactful stories, data analysis and events that highlight our work and its importance. The Coordinator will also maintain and develop ongoing relationships with key media (national and international) and stakeholders, continuously updating and managing Save the Children's media catalogues.

This role supports our mission by fostering an environment that challenges systemic oppression and promotes equality by ensuring our communications reflect the rich diversity of the communities we serve.

KEY AREAS:

1. Strategic Content Development:

Lead the creation of high-quality strategic content for media, donors, partners and other key stakeholders, ensuring it aligns with Save the Children's institutional goals and current humanitarian and field projects connections.

2. Visibility, communication planning and coordination:   

Identify and use opportunities to increase the visibility of the Office's activities by developing and implementing communication strategies. Cooperate withcommunications team and technical specialists to maximize these opportunities. Collaborate with other departments and external partners to leverage skills and experience, ensuring effective media coverage and support for critical initiatives. Liaise with the Regional Office and members of the organization to conduct communication activities, facilitate visits and coordinate inbound communication support during emergencies when necessary. 

3. Building and maintaining relationships:

Develop and maintain strong internal relationships with regional offices, the Global Media Group (GMU) and SCI members, as well as establish external partnerships with media and key stakeholders parties in the field of communications if necessary.

4. Collection and analysis of information:  

 Coordinate with technical specialists the collection, analysis and distribution of key information regarding the problems of children in Ukraine. This should inform strategic audiences and strengthen advocacy efforts.

5. Media Relations Management:  

Build and maintain relationships with journalists and opinion leaders to effectively cover stories that advance the goals, mission and vision of Save the Children. Promptly respond to media inquiries and facilitate interviews by providing appropriate content.

6. Media Production and Distribution:  

Create compelling media materials, including press releases, briefings and multimedia content, ensuring timely distribution to increase visibility and impact across platforms. Proactively identify and generate story ideas and news angles, promote media coverage, and produce high-quality content such as case studies, vlogs, video, photography, and social media content. Work closely with journalists and field teams during missions to ensure effective coverage and broad media coverage. Consolidate information on current activities and response measures in Ukraine to provide comprehensive and timely updates for media and public communications. Work closely with the Digital Communications Specialist to support the use of digital and social media to raise awareness of our issues among various audiences.

7. Campaign Support, Positioning and Capacity Building:

Contribute to the positioning of institutional communications campaigns and global initiatives, ensuring effective communication and audience outreach to support fundraising and advocacy goals. Train staff to effectively act as spokespeople for the organization, ensuring media readiness and improving the communication skills of the entire team. 

8. Crisis management and reputation protection:

Implement crisis management strategies, monitor the media and respond to emerging issues to protect Save the Children's reputation and maintain public trust.

 

Collaborate with other departments and external partners to ensure effective allocation of resources, timely achievement of agreed results and overall smooth operation of team initiatives.

10. Travel and additional duties:

Travel around Ukraine and abroad as necessary to ensure effective media support for the initiatives of the Save the Children Foundation. Perform additional tasks necessary to ensure smooth operation of the team and support the Save the Children mission, including acting as a spokesperson when necessary. Prepare effective media briefings and press releases to influence politicians and support fundraising goals. Participate in after-hours rotations as needed.

Perform other tasks and responsibilities necessary to ensure the smooth functioning of the team, interdepartmental collaboration and the overall mission of Save the Children.

QUALIFICATIONS

Higher education or equivalent work experience in journalism, media, communications or similar discipline. 

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Main qualifications:

  • Higher education in the field of journalism, in strategic communications, media relations, or public relations.
  • Minimum of 3 years of proven public relations experience and accomplishments, including successful engagement with media and key stakeholders. 
  • Demonstrated ability to independently develop and implement strategies to secure significant media coverage.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and strong communication skills.
  • Proactive mindset with the ability to make strategic decisions to achieve desired results. 
  • Well-established contacts to produce news stories with international journalists, editors and the wider media environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to adapt messages for different audiences and media platforms.
  • Politically and culturally aware, with displays of patience, tact and diplomacy.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English and Ukrainian languages.
  • Full alignment with the mission, vision, values ​​and goals of Save the Children.
  • Ability to influence and collaborate cross-organizationally, interact effectively with senior management and field teams at all levels to advocate specific perspectives.
  • Competence in communicating effectively and empathetically with the people we support, including children, young people and their family.
  • Ability to confidently analyze data (scientific, technical, socio-economic) to uncover stories and develop compelling news narratives.
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines and prioritize effectively during managing several projects under stress.

Desired qualifications:

  • Experience work in the field human rights and children's rights.
  • Previous work experience in international non-governmental organizations.
  • Experience in multimedia production.
