The Director of Production provides critical leadership and oversight to the production team and stage crew, responsible for delivering a busy schedule of performances by the San Diego Symphony and high-profile guest artists at Jacobs Music Center, The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park and at a variety of other locations and venues in Southern California. The Director of Production will be a production professional with extensive experience working with orchestras, commercial artists, and the ability to support rental events in Association venues. In addition to highly developed production skills, the Director of Production must be an excellent leader and communicator, motivating and managing a wide range of team members and maintaining positive relations with peers, partners, and performers. This is a full-time, year-round position with a busy schedule of weekend and evening work.RequirementsEssential Duties & Responsibilities:Team Management:Lead a team of production associates to manage all aspects of production planning and advancing of concerts for San Diego Symphony at the Jacobs Music Center and The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, as well as run outs and community concerts, which take place in other venues, plus same for non-orchestral events at Association venuesMaintain knowledge of musician and stagehand union agreements to ensure complianceTakes lead on all matters pertaining to the stage crewProvide oversight of relationships with key production vendors and contractorsLead weekly Production and Artistic/Production Meetings to advance concerts and eventsFinancial Management:Prepare and manage Production Department budgetReview contracts and riders to prepare expense estimates including labor costs in a timely manner for the Vice President of Artistic Administration and Audience Development to determine feasibility of booking guest artistsAssist Director of Stage Operations with preparation of weekly IATSE payroll, as neededProduction Planning as assigned, and/or by delegation:Ensure creation and distribution of production documents, run of show plans and stage plotsReview guest artist riders and ensure production plans are designed in accordance, which may include input from the Production & Technical Designer and Audio Director, Artistic staff, Orchestra Operations staff, Music Director, and guest conductorsCollaborate with visiting performing artists to ensure that production needs are met within the parameters of Jacobs Music Center or The Rady Shell at Jacobs ParkUse VectorWorks to create stage plots as needed, accounting for spacing and equipment requirements of each program. Confirm and manage venue information when performing in other venuesProduction Management as assigned, and/or by direction:Proactively anticipate potential staging concerns, such as temperature, lighting or safety, and effectively problem-solve before the beginning of any given service. Ensure production team supervision of stagehands; provide presence and leadership for load-in’s, rehearsal set ups and strike, performances and load-out of all Association eventsServe as Production Manager or Stage Manager and call/run all types of shows as assignedAct as liaison between guest artists, technical personnel, venue, and Symphony musiciansTouring & Runouts:Share in department responsibility of managing all production and logistical arrangements for tours, both for production staff and cargo. Accompany the orchestra on tours and run outsAssist in preparing outside venues for arrival of Association on event daysOther duties as assignedAsset & Equipment Management:Supervise rental of backline, production equipment and instruments as neededSupervise inventory and maintenance of Association owned instruments and equipmentCommunication & Teamwork:Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with stage crew, orchestra musicians, Music Director, guest artists and conductor, vendors, outside presenters, and all internal Association staffEnsure artistic staff are provided with the necessary production information for the Music Director, guest conductors, guest artists and their managersCoordinate and communicate seat holds and kills for concerts at Association venues to Vice President of Artistic Administration and Audience Development and Vice President of Marketing and CommunicationsEnsure production information for all events is recorded for archival referenceEducation, Experience and Abilities:Proven knowledge of the music and entertainment industryA minimum 6 years of relevant experience, working with an American Orchestra Excellent written and verbal communication skills; attention to detailProven leadership and project managementIn-depth knowledge of VectorWorks or other CAD software for preparing stage plotsExperience working with external promotors and venue rental clientsGeneral knowledge of artists and repertoireTouring experience preferredExcellent computer skills, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, drafting softwareDedication and commitment to engage in and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the staff, vendors, and within interactions with the surrounding community Ability to work varied hours, including nights, weekends, and holidaysAbility to:Communicate tactfully at all levels, particularly under pressureFocus on many projects simultaneously and to meet deadlinesThrive in a fast-paced environment with high volume of workWork effectively in a highly collaborative and communicative team environmentMaintain discretion and confidentialityLead production team and stage crewGeneral Requirements: Regular, predictable attendance required for numerous evening and weekend work shiftsAvailable to work regular business hours in addition to evenings, weekends, overtime, and some holidays as requiredAble to work independently with minimal oversightAble to sit or stand for extended periods of timeAble to pick up and move a minimum of 30 lbsWorking Conditions: Normal office working conditions: sitting at a desk and computer terminal for long periods of time, typing and computer work, light to moderate lifting.
