Mercy Corps’ Crisis Analysis teams aggregate and analyze data to improve decision making and access in complex crises. The teams support our programming in Syria, Lebanon, Democratic Republic of Congo and other locations. The teams directly contribute to data-driven decision making by layering information from primary sources, open sources and responders’ programmatic data, where it is analyzed by subject matter experts and data scientists. This analysis is grounded in Mercy Corps’ status as an operational NGO, keeping products constructive and relevant. Typical products and services range from informal briefings to weekly products, contributions to risk assessments, in-depth assessment of the political economy of a defined geography, deep dives on specific themes, etc., ranging in themes from conflict to market systems to governance, in line with programmatic needs.

In response to the complex humanitarian situation in Ukraine as well as the regional implications of this crisis, Mercy Corps established a Ukraine Crisis Analysis Team (UACAT). In 2025, UACAT will expand its reach as a broker for operationally relevant analyses. The role of UACAT is one of guiding and influencing 1) those within the development, peacebuilding, and humanitarian sectors who are implementing programs on the ground, and 2) decision makers at policy and advocacy levels. The team will provide insight into the national and regional economic and social impacts of the war, as well as the impact on humanitarian operations in contexts that are particularly vulnerable to the economic effects of the war.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

At the completion of this internships, the UACAT Intern Analyst will possess:

• Experience in being part of analytical team that provides insight into the national and regional economic and social impacts of the war, as well as the impact on humanitarian operations.
• Develop an understanding of the work and mission of Mercy Corps Ukraine’s humanitarian program, specifically related to emergency response, crisis and context analysis.
• Ability to organize and analyze big volumes of information.
• Ability to draft analytical products.
• Understand the research cycle, including data collection, management, and analysis of information.
• Knowledge on ethical data collection approaches.
• Experience in public speaking and presenting detailed information in a concise way (in both English and Ukrainian).

RESPONSILITIES:

The intern will be responsible for media and qualitative/quantitative data analysis track in UACAT and contribute to three projects: "Context-Based Planning Sessions" and "Political-Economy and Thematic Products." She/he will support UACAT with the following activities.

• Update a media monitoring tool for UACAT with the support and guidance of Senior Analysts to inform Context-Based Planning Sessions, Political-Economy and Thematic Products.
• Refine the database of media monitoring indicators for Context-Based Planning Sessions, Political-Economy and Thematic Products.
• Conduct regular monitoring of media, including social media, at the national and hromada level, to inform Context-Based Planning Sessions, Political-Economy and Thematic Products.
• Develop biweekly preliminary media analysis at the hromada level to inform Context-Based Planning Sessions.
• Develop monthly preliminary media analysis at the national level to inform Political-Economy Product.
• Support Senior Analysts in developing Thematic Products by gathering and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data or information from multiple sources.
• Assist in data collection, preparation of reports, presentations, and data visualizations to communicate relevant findings and insights.
• Conduct monthly UACAT website visibility analysis and support website management to enhance the outreach of UACAT products.
• Support translation of UACAT’s relevant materials from English to Ukrainian, and vice versa.
• Participate in meetings, discussions and brainstorming with the UACAT team to provide analytical support.
• Support ad-hoc projects and tasks as needed to contribute to the team's overall success.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

Internship candidates should demonstrate the following:

• University degree (Master) in progress or recently completed (within 2 years) in relevant disciplines (Political Science, Peace and Conflict Studies, International Relations, War Studies, Economy, Agriculture etc.).
• Demonstrated interest in context analysis, developing analytical products or conducting research.
• Demonstrated interest in such topics as economy and agriculture, war dynamics, reintegration, energy crisis etc.
• Basic contextual awareness, including social, economic and political developments, humanitarian field and civil society networks.
• Basic academic or analytical writing skills.
• Basic skills of using databases and other information systems for structuring information and data analysis.
• Basic web site managing and editing skills.
• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
• Strong skills of searching and triangulating information, basic OSINT knowledge.
• Team player, who can also work independently.
• Excellent written and spoken in Ukrainian and English
• Competency in internet and Microsoft Office systems including Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
• Competency in social media tools including Facebook, Telegram, WhatsApp.
